Gilbert entered the Army, attended Officers Candidate School and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. After nine months as an AST (Army Specialized Training) instructor at PMC, e was assigned to the 276th Regiment. Gilbert was wounded in action in Germany. Before he could be evacuated the Germans launched a counter attack driving the Americans back. At that time Gilbert was listed as missing
